Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has emerged as a possible departure this summer after his camp reportedly made contact with Barcelona over a switch to Catalonia.
Regular first-team football could become harder to come by for the young Swede following Tottenham’s significant midfield spending this summer, with both Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes brought into the fold.
Bergvall has made 11 Premier League starts in each of his two campaigns at the club so far, but that involvement now looks under threat with two fresh faces added to the engine room. Spurs are believed to be keen on retaining the youngster given his age and the value he brings to squad depth, though his representatives may be weighing up alternative paths for his career.
The 20-year-old has reportedly drawn plenty of interest this summer, with his agents said to be exploring options away from north London.
Foot Mercato reports that Bergvall’s representatives have opened dialogue with Barcelona over a potential switch, though the discussions have not been enough to reignite serious interest from the Catalan club, despite Barça having tracked him back in 2024. His camp is said to have been in contact with Barcelona’s sporting department under Deco, but there is currently no concrete plan in place for a move.
Barcelona were strongly linked with Bergvall two years ago, with the player even travelling to the club alongside his family during that round of talks. Tottenham, however, won out in the end by tabling a superior financial package.
For now, a switch to Barcelona looks unlikely, though Bergvall’s situation at Tottenham may well develop into one of the more notable subplots of the summer window.
Midfield exits could follow heavy spending
Tottenham’s outlay this summer in strengthening Roberto De Zerbi’s options has been considerable, and that investment may force the club’s hand when it comes to trimming the midfield ranks before the window shuts.
With Tonali and Fernandes added to a group already featuring Archie Gray, Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, Conor Gallagher, Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison, Spurs now boast considerable depth in that area of the pitch. Given the sheer number of options at De Zerbi’s disposal, it would come as little surprise if one or two midfielders were allowed to leave this summer.
Bergvall could well be among them, especially if his representatives keep testing the market elsewhere. Should Tottenham sanction his exit, the club may not even feel the need to bring in a replacement given how well-stocked De Zerbi’s midfield already is.
