Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is reportedly edging closer to a move away from north London, with Atlético Madrid emerging as his preferred destination after advanced transfer negotiations.

The 28-year-old centre-back has attracted interest from several major European clubs, including Arsenal and Inter Milan. However, Atlético have now moved to the front of the queue, with talks believed to be progressing positively.

Diego Simeone is keen to strengthen his defence and sees Romero as an excellent fit for his demanding style of football. The Argentine is renowned for his physicality, aggressive defending, bravery in challenges and ability to defend on the front foot — qualities that perfectly suit Simeone’s approach.

Romero’s experience at both club and international level would also give Atlético an experienced and combative presence at the heart of their defence.
For Tottenham, a reported fee of around €40 million could be viewed as relatively low given Romero’s quality and importance to the squad. However, the defender’s apparent preference for a move to Madrid could weaken Spurs’ negotiating position.
With Atlético determined to push the deal through, Tottenham must now decide whether accepting a fee in the region of €40 million represents the best outcome.
Although the transfer has yet to be officially completed, the latest developments suggest Romero’s time at Tottenham could be coming to an end. If Atlético reach a final agreement with Spurs, the Argentine could soon begin a new chapter under Simeone in La Liga.
