SPURS ON THE BRINK: Tottenham Must Win On Final Day To Avoid First Relegation In 48 Years

Premier League survival has come down to a straight shootout between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, with the fate of both clubs to be decided on the final day of the season.

Spurs’ hopes of securing safety were dealt a major blow after falling to a 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge, a result that kept West Ham’s survival dream alive. Roberto De Zerbi’s side needed just a single point against Chelsea to put the matter to bed and end months of anxiety — but old defensive habits resurfaced at the worst possible moment.

Chelsea’s goals came through Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos either side of half-time, with Richarlison’s late strike doing little more than setting up a nervy finale.

Heading into the season’s last fixture, Spurs hold a two-point cushion over West Ham in 18th. The Hammers’ only route to safety requires them to overcome Leeds at home while simultaneously banking on an Everton victory at Spurs. Even if West Ham do win and Spurs only draw, Tottenham’s goal difference advantage — a full 12 goals better — would likely be enough to preserve their top-flight status.

Burnley and Wolves have already been condemned to the Championship, leaving the final relegation place to be settled when all 20 sides kick off together on Sunday.

It has been a turbulent campaign for the north London club. Thomas Frank departed after just eight months in the dugout — despite steering the team into the Champions League knockout stages — with Spurs uncomfortably close to the drop zone even then. De Zerbi inherited a fragile situation and has done enough to keep Spurs in control of their own destiny — but this Sunday will be the ultimate test of his early reign.

For the Spurs faithful, the equation is brutally simple. Anything less than a win, and they risk making history in the worst way imaginable.
