Spurs Suffer Significant Setback Despite Remarkable Survival as Club Announce Troubling End-of-Season News

Alejo Véliz arrived at Tottenham Hotspur from Rosario Central in August 2023, but never managed to establish himself in the Premier League, failing to secure a regular spot in the first team.

The young Argentine attacker was sent on loan to Sevilla in January 2024 and later to Espanyol, yet struggled to cement a consistent role at either club.

Last summer, Spurs arranged for him to return to Rosario Central on a season-long loan.

During the January transfer window, Brazilian club Bahia expressed serious interest in signing the 22-year-old outright, and Tottenham were open to a deal. The north London side accepted an offer, but Rosario Central refused to terminate his loan early, preventing an immediate departure.

By February, it was reported that a fee of approximately €9m had been agreed for Véliz to make a permanent move to Bahia once the summer window opens.

On Tuesday, he found the net in Rosario Central’s dominant 4-0 Copa Libertadores victory over Universidad Central de Venezuela. His emotional reaction at full time fuelled widespread speculation that it could have been his final outing for the club.

The next day, reports from Argentina suggested he had already bid farewell to his teammates at the Gigante de Arroyito, with his transfer to Bahia expected to be finalised when his loan concludes.

Club captain Marco Ruben spoke warmly of the striker, wishing him well, acknowledging his contribution to the team, and expressing hope that they would cross paths again one day. Véliz himself spoke of the honour of wearing the club’s famous number nine shirt and pledged to give his all wherever his career leads him next.

Tottenham are now set to sell the striker permanently, having originally signed him for around £13m. He made only a limited number of appearances for the club before a series of loan spells, and the anticipated €9m fee will bring his time in north London to a close.
