Arne Slot is said to have made a “disrespectful” remark to Liverpool’s new arrivals before being sacked.

Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is reported to have strained his relationship with several players after allegedly making insulting comments during his time at Anfield.

Despite guiding Liverpool to a Premier League title in 2025, Slot was dismissed on May 30 following a disappointing fifth-place finish and a trophyless campaign in his final season.

He has since been replaced by former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, whose appointment was officially confirmed by the club on social media on Thursday, June 4. Since his departure, the Dutchman has been linked with several major jobs, including roles at Serie A giants AC Milan and Premier League side Fulham. Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan has also claimed Slot could be open to taking over from Ronald Koeman as Netherlands manager after the upcoming World Cup.

However, reports suggest tensions inside the Liverpool dressing room grew during the latter stages of his tenure, with German outlet BILD claiming some players were frustrated by what they viewed as a mix of “objective criticism, arrogance, and personal digs.”

Following the summer arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Hugo Ekitike from the Bundesliga, Slot is said to have questioned them with remarks such as, “Did you win the Premier League?” while also allegedly adding, “You can play like that in Germany,” during tactical discussions.

Several Liverpool players, including Alexander Isak, Ibrahima Konaté, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo, also have Bundesliga experience, adding to the sensitivity of those comments.

When results declined in autumn 2025, with Liverpool losing nine of 12 matches, frustration reportedly grew inside the squad. Some players believed the 2024/25 success was heavily influenced by Jürgen Klopp’s foundations, while senior figures like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are said to have begun losing confidence in Slot’s leadership and tactical direction.

Salah later publicly called for a shift in approach, urging a return to the intense “heavy metal” style associated with the Klopp era. In a post shared on Instagram in May, he reflected on Liverpool’s rise from underdogs to champions, praising the hard work behind their success and expressing pride in the journey.

He added that Liverpool should return to an aggressive, attacking identity capable of dominating opponents and winning trophies consistently, stressing that this philosophy should remain non-negotiable for anyone joining the club.
