Darwin Nunez is expected to leave Al-Hilal in the summer transfer window, with an “unthinkable” transfer emerging.
The Uruguay international has had a difficult start to life in Saudi Arabia after departing Liverpool following a Premier League-winning campaign, despite falling out of favour under Arne Slot.
Nunez never fully lived up to expectations at Anfield after Jurgen Klopp spent £85m to sign him from Benfica, with flashes of brilliance often offset by missed clear-cut chances. The 26-year-old began brightly in the Middle East, scoring four goals and providing two assists in his first five appearances. However, after Karim Benzema joined rivals Al-Ittihad, Nunez was left out of the Saudi Pro League squad in February 2026 due to foreign player limits, restricting him to AFC Champions League matches and bringing a frustrating end to his season.
Reports now suggest Nunez has agreed with Al-Hilal’s hierarchy to leave this summer, with some claims indicating his contract could be terminated to allow a free exit. That situation has sparked widespread interest, with Chelsea and Newcastle reportedly among those monitoring a possible Premier League return.
Barcelona have also entered the race for his signature if they fail to land Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, according to Mundo Deportivo. However, the same report adds that an even more unexpected scenario could unfold, with Liverpool themselves keeping track of developments and considering a sensational return for the striker.
New head coach Andoni Iraola’s intense, high-pressing style could suit Nunez, especially as Liverpool look to strengthen their attack. Record signing Alexander Isak struggled with form and fitness in his first season, while Hugo Ekitike is expected to miss the entire campaign through injury.
With Mohamed Salah set to depart and Federico Chiesa also expected to leave, Liverpool are in urgent need of attacking reinforcements, and a free transfer for Nunez could prove a smart move given they sold him for around £46m just a year earlier.
Nunez could offer valuable rotation support for Isak and adapt to multiple attacking roles in Iraola’s system. While Milan, Juventus, and Fenerbahce have also been linked, none of those potential moves would be as shocking as a dramatic return to Anfield.
