The teenage sensation breaking records for Liverpool and England — with one unusual restriction still in place
Rio Ngumoha has had a meteoric rise through football’s highest levels, but one peculiar rule continues to follow him everywhere he goes: at just 17, he is not permitted to share a dressing room with senior teammates like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, or Harry Kane.
The winger announced himself to the world in August 2025, coming off the bench to score a late winner in Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle on his Premier League debut. The breakthrough continued rapidly — a professional contract until 2028 followed, and then a senior England debut that made him one of the youngest Three Lions ever to earn a cap.
Yet despite rubbing shoulders with football’s elite on the pitch, Football Association regulations prevent Ngumoha from sharing changing facilities with adult teammates. The rule is straightforward: any player under 18 is classified as a child and must be kept separate from senior dressing rooms. He will only be free of the restriction when he turns 18 on August 29 — a rule that previously affected Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri and fellow teenager Max Dowman.
On the pitch, none of that has visibly held him back. Ngumoha has looked entirely at ease alongside Salah, Van Dijk, Szoboszlai, and Gravenberch, and earned widespread praise on his England debut against New Zealand.
Off it, the youngster has spoken warmly about those who helped him settle. Trey Nyoni was credited with easing his transition during pre-season, while Salah — someone Ngumoha describes as a personal idol — has been a daily source of inspiration. It was Andy Robertson, however, who appeared to take the most active mentorship role, offering guidance the teenager described as invaluable.
Robertson’s move to Tottenham Hotspur means Ngumoha now continues his development without one of his most important influences — but with his trajectory so far, the future looks anything but uncertain.
