Rio Ngumoha delivered a memorable performance for England during their World Cup warm-up victory over New Zealand on Saturday, catching the eye despite not being part of Thomas Tuchel’s official 26-man squad.
The friendly was largely uneventful, with Tuchel using 22 players as England continued preparations for the tournament in the United States. A first-half header from Harry Kane proved decisive, securing a narrow win while allowing the squad to adapt to local conditions.
While the result itself drew little attention, Ngumoha’s second-half cameo stole the spotlight. The 17-year-old Liverpool prospect impressed with his energy and attacking threat, earning the Man of the Match award and becoming the fifth-youngest debutant in England men’s team history at 17 years and 281 days old.
His display quickly sparked calls from supporters for a late inclusion in England’s World Cup squad. However, despite his standout performance, such a move is impossible under FIFA regulations.
Ngumoha travelled with the England camp as one of several supplementary players helping to fill training sessions while a number of senior stars arrived late following European club commitments. Alongside Alex Scott, Josh King and Ethan Nwaneri, he was never part of the official tournament squad.
Even if injuries were to strike before England’s opening World Cup match, Ngumoha could not be called up. FIFA rules only allow late replacements from the provisional 55-man squad submitted before the tournament, and the Liverpool youngster was not included on that list.
As a result, regardless of form, injuries, or public demand, Ngumoha remains ineligible for World Cup selection. He is expected to return home after England’s final warm-up match against Costa Rica, while Tuchel finalises preparations for the tournament.
Of the four supplementary youngsters in camp, only Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott remains eligible for a late call-up, having been included in England’s preliminary 55-man squad submitted to FIFA.
