Neville: Spurs Have One of the ‘Best Worst Centre-Backs in the World’

Neville Hails Romero’s Fighting Spirit After Argentina’s Stunning Turnaround

Gary Neville has showered praise on Cristian Romero — though this time it wasn’t his defending that impressed him.

Argentina produced one of the great World Cup comebacks, clawing back from 2-0 down to beat Egypt 3-2, with all three goals arriving in a frantic 14-minute burst that left the Egyptians reeling.

True to form, Romero was at the heart of it all. The Tottenham man got the fightback started with a headed goal in the 79th minute, his second of the tournament — and it’s that habit of popping up in the opposition box that’s got Neville talking.

Neville praises the pair’s refusal to quit

Reacting to the win at Atlanta Stadium, Neville picked out Romero and his centre-back partner Lisandro Martínez for their fearless, never-say-die mentality.

The former Manchester United defender dubbed them the “best worst centre-backs in the world” — a nod to their tendency to gift the opposition goals while somehow always delivering when their team needs them most.

Speaking on ITV, Neville explained that Romero and Martínez concede goals all the time but shrug it off because they know they’ll make up for it further up the pitch. He pointed to their outsized personalities and refusal to stop competing, no matter the scoreline.

He went further, describing how at 2-0 down Argentina looked to be hanging on, yet it was Romero and Martínez dragging them back into it — proof, he said, that their fighting instinct never switches off.

Spurs supporters won’t need convincing of Romero’s eye for goal. He racked up six goals and four assists last season for Tottenham.
