Tottenham fans are split following new reports that Djed Spence could be heading to Inter Milan.
The full-back has drawn increasing attention this summer after a strong showing for England at the World Cup. Though not a regular starter, Spence has repeatedly made a mark off the bench, standing out for his pace, direct running and defensive contributions whenever he’s featured.
His most recent outing against Norway reinforced why he’s attracting suitors. In just 34 minutes on the pitch, the Spurs defender put in an impressive all-around performance, completing 86 per cent of his passes, getting a shot on target, winning important duels and contributing significantly at the back through tackles, clearances and interceptions.
Spence’s World Cup showings have boosted his profile at a time when multiple clubs are on the hunt for attack-minded full-backs. Everton have long been linked and are said to rate the Tottenham man at roughly £25 million.
Inter Milan have now joined the race, with the Serie A champions reportedly keeping tabs on the 24-year-old as they look to bolster their right-side options before the new season begins.
Tottenham’s fanbase has responded with mixed feelings. Plenty of supporters say they’d be gutted to see Spence leave, though many also acknowledge that turning down a club of Inter’s standing would be tough for him. Some believe his value is at its peak after a strong World Cup, making a sale now a shrewd move, while others say they’d prefer him to head overseas rather than boost a domestic rival. A few fans think Inter would suit his playing style well, and some insisted Spurs should hold out for a much bigger fee — with one supporter half-jokingly naming £50 million as the only acceptable price.
For Spence, the interest brings a significant decision. At Tottenham, he’s up against stiff competition for both full-back spots under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. A move to Inter, on the other hand, could hand him a clearer path to becoming an established wing-back at one of Europe’s elite clubs — Inter are the current Serie A champions and have reached two Champions League finals in the last five years, adding to the appeal.
Spence is set to stay with England through the rest of the World Cup, with the squad now one win from the final. After the tournament, he’ll get a short break before returning to Tottenham, where talks with De Zerbi about his future are expected to follow.
What was once just a summer rumour has become a real point of debate among Spurs fans. While many would be sorry to see Spence go, there’s a growing sense that a switch to Inter Milan could be the right move for him if Tottenham get a fair price.
