‘We now have…’ – Andoni Iraola delivers major Liverpool boost ahead of Como double-header
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has confirmed a significant boost for his squad ahead of Sunday’s two friendly matches against Como.
The Reds will take on the Italian side twice on Sunday, with the first meeting taking place behind closed doors at the AXA Training Centre at 11:30am. The second match will be played in front of supporters at Anfield at 6pm, with Liverpool expected to name a stronger team for the evening fixture.
Alexis Mac Allister was the final member of Liverpool’s World Cup contingent to return from his post-tournament break, reporting back to the AXA Training Centre earlier this week. The arrival of Ronald Araujo on loan has also given Iraola another option as he prepares for the new season.
Iraola confirms Liverpool squad boost
Speaking ahead of the Como double-header, Iraola expressed his satisfaction at finally having Mac Allister back and available for selection after the midfielder missed Liverpool’s previous pre-season games.
The Liverpool boss said that with Mac Allister returning on Monday, the club now has all of its players back from the World Cup, describing the situation as a major benefit for the team.
Iraola has had to manage a staggered return of several key players throughout pre-season. Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak joined the squad during the club’s tour of the United States, while Mac Allister only returned this week.
That has limited the amount of time Iraola has had to work with some of his most important first-team players before the Premier League campaign gets underway next weekend.
Liverpool still won’t have a completely full squad against Como. Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni remain unavailable because of long-term injuries, while Joe Gomez is also expected to miss out following the injury he suffered against Sunderland.
Nevertheless, Mac Allister’s return and Araujo’s arrival represent timely boosts for Iraola. Jeremy Jacquet could also feature if he recovers in time for Sunday’s matches.
While Liverpool supporters will obviously hope to see their side secure two victories, the priority will be ensuring the players finish both games without injuries. Iraola will want to avoid any additional selection headaches before Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Newcastle next weekend.
