Liverpool Face Major Changes as Richard Hughes’ Final Transfer Window Takes Shape
Richard Hughes’ time at Liverpool appears to be nearing its conclusion, with reports suggesting the sporting director could leave Anfield for Al Hilal once the summer transfer window closes.
Before departing, however, Hughes still has plenty of work to complete if he wants to leave Liverpool feeling satisfied with his contribution.
The club is going through a major period of change. There is a new manager in Andoni Iraola, several new players have arrived, and the ownership structure has also shifted with the addition of new minority shareholders. It genuinely feels like the beginning of a new era at Anfield, although the full impact of those changes remains to be seen.
With only around two weeks remaining before the transfer window shuts, Liverpool could still be involved in significant activity.
For Hughes, these final weeks could have a major influence on how his time at the club is remembered.
He deserves recognition for helping bring Iraola to Liverpool, but there is also little doubt that the squad was left somewhat unbalanced last season. Some of the players recruited by Hughes could eventually prove to be outstanding signings, but for now, many supporters may not be overly concerned by the prospect of his departure.
His biggest task is clear: Liverpool need more speed, greater movement and, above all, a solution for the huge attacking void created by Mohamed Salah.
So far, replacing Salah has proven difficult.
Yan Diomande was considered a leading option to fill the gap, but Liverpool ultimately missed out, with the winger completing a move to Real Madrid. That has forced the Reds to reassess their options in the market.
There could also be another major departure to deal with.
Cody Gakpo is attracting serious interest from Tottenham, who are pushing to bring the Dutch forward to north London. Liverpool appear increasingly willing to consider the possibility of his exit.
If Gakpo leaves, Liverpool would potentially lose the two players who contributed the most goals and assists during their 2024/25 Premier League title-winning campaign.
Even so, Liverpool’s attack needs to evolve.
The arrivals of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz have added significant quality, but the Reds now need attacking players with different characteristics around them. They require more explosive pace, more runs in behind and greater intensity when pressing without the ball.
That makes Bradley Barcola an especially attractive option.
The Paris Saint-Germain winger fits the profile Liverpool need and could become one of the most important targets of Hughes’ final weeks in charge of recruitment.
Barcola is among the quickest players in European football. Last season, he reportedly reached a top speed of 36.7km/h, ranking him fifth among the fastest players in the Champions League.
That level of acceleration would add a completely different dimension to Liverpool’s attack.
And there are now growing signs that a deal could actually happen.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that his confidence in Barcola joining Liverpool is increasing, suggesting the Reds are making progress in their efforts to bring the Frenchman to Anfield.
The latest developments are particularly encouraging for Liverpool, especially with PSG strengthening their own attacking options.
With increased competition for places in Paris, Barcola’s situation could become increasingly favourable for the Reds.
Liverpool still have work to do, but the final weeks of the transfer window could completely reshape Iraola’s attack. If Hughes can secure Barcola and add the pace and dynamism the squad currently lacks, he could leave Anfield having made one final major contribution.
