Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall is reportedly considering his future after submitting a transfer request earlier this summer amid concerns over his playing time.
The 20-year-old is said to be worried about his chances of securing regular first-team football following Spurs’ midfield reinforcements, with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes arriving in north London. Those additions have reportedly led Bergvall to question his role under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi and explore the possibility of a move.
De Zerbi is believed to be eager to keep the Swedish talent, although he would not stand in the player’s way if Bergvall pushes strongly for an exit. Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United have already had offers rejected, but both clubs are expected to return with improved bids.
Despite uncertainty surrounding his future, Bergvall has played a key role during Tottenham’s pre-season campaign after cutting short his break following the World Cup. The midfielder has featured regularly in his preferred double-pivot position and once again impressed in Spurs’ 3-0 win over Hoffenheim.
Bergvall partnered new signing Sandro Tonali in midfield, with the pair showing strong chemistry and helping Tottenham dominate possession and dictate the game.
His display also drew praise from Tonali. After Bergvall posted photos from the Hoffenheim victory on Instagram, the Italian international reportedly commented that his teammate is a “top player”, highlighting the respect the young Swede has earned within the squad.
Tonali’s praise underlines the quality Spurs could lose should Bergvall decide to leave before the transfer window closes.
Competition for midfield places has intensified, leaving Bergvall’s future uncertain. Since arriving from IF Djurgarden in 2024, the Stockholm-born midfielder has made 78 appearances, scoring two goals and providing nine assists. Despite his age, he remains highly rated by both De Zerbi and the Tottenham hierarchy, who see him as an important part of the club’s future.
However, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle are reportedly preparing fresh offers, while Tottenham are believed to value Bergvall at around £60 million.
Any interested club would therefore need to submit a significant bid to persuade Spurs to sell one of their brightest young talents. With the transfer window nearing its end and Bergvall continuing to impress in pre-season, his situation is shaping up to be one of the key stories to follow in the coming weeks.
