After Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, another Liverpool FC star is poised to depart on a free transfer

Club captain Virgil van Dijk is widely expected to depart at the end of the 2026/27 campaign, signalling the end of one of the most defining eras in Anfield’s history.

According to The Athletic, the 34-year-old still has one year left on his current deal, with an “anticipated farewell” pencilled in for the summer of 2027. Although he remains a guaranteed starter under Arne Slot, Liverpool’s growing focus on younger defensive options indicates that a contract extension is unlikely at this stage.

This development follows a wave of major departure news, with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson also approaching the final months of their time on Merseyside. As reported by James Pearce, Liverpool’s defensive structure is already undergoing a significant transition.

Pearce noted that van Dijk is entering the final year of his deal ahead of an expected exit, while reports indicate the club are leading the chase for Marcos Senesi of AFC Bournemouth as a long-term, left-footed replacement.

By the time his contract expires, van Dijk will be 35 and is expected to leave on a free transfer.

When he eventually moves on in 2027, van Dijk will do so as one of the greatest defenders in Premier League history—and arguably the finest centre-back ever to represent Liverpool. Since his £75 million move from Southampton FC in 2018, then a world-record fee for a defender, he has been the cornerstone of the club’s modern success.

His influence on Liverpool’s identity cannot be overstated, having transformed a fragile backline into the backbone of a team that went on to win every major honour.

Despite the current dip in morale following recent domestic and European setbacks, van Dijk’s decision to see out his contract means supporters at Anfield will have one final season to appreciate a true club legend.
