Arne Slot has defended his much-debated decision to substitute teenage star Rio Ngumoha during Liverpool’s frustrating 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday.
The change quickly became one of the major talking points of the game, with thousands of Liverpool fans voicing their anger after the 17-year-old winger was taken off midway through the second half. Loud boos rang around Anfield as supporters made their feelings known.
Ngumoha had been one of Liverpool’s standout performers throughout a difficult afternoon, repeatedly causing problems for Chelsea’s defence with his pace, confidence, and direct attacking play. Many fans were shocked to see the youngster replaced while several experienced players stayed on the pitch.
Speaking after the match, Slot explained that the teenager had been struggling physically and suggested the substitution was made to prevent a potential injury problem.
The Liverpool boss revealed that Ngumoha informed the coaching staff he was unsure whether he could continue due to muscle discomfort. Slot admitted he understood why supporters were unhappy with the decision but stressed that he had to make the final call based on information the crowd did not know.
The Dutchman also acknowledged the reaction from the stands, admitting it was understandable considering how impressive the youngster had been during the match.
Unfortunately for Liverpool, the change did little to improve the team’s performance. Alexander Isak, who came on in Ngumoha’s place, struggled to influence the game, and the contrast between both players’ displays became a major talking point after the final whistle.

Ngumoha’s energetic performance was one of the few positives for Liverpool in what has otherwise been a disappointing campaign. The teenager’s growing popularity among supporters continues to rise, with many fans viewing him as one of the club’s brightest emerging talents.
Meanwhile, scrutiny surrounding Slot is continuing to intensify as Liverpool’s difficult season rolls on. 👀
