Mason Greenwood’s position at Marseille is looking increasingly precarious, with reports emerging linking Tottenham to a potential move for the 24-year-old.
Greenwood departed Manchester United amid significant controversy but has gone on to rehabilitate his standing through his performances in France, scoring 47 goals in 79 appearances across two seasons at Marseille — 25 of them in the current campaign. Despite that impressive return, his future at the club is in doubt following a serious fallout involving new manager Habib Beye and senior figures at the club, with Marseille now reportedly willing to let him leave in the summer.
The link to Tottenham stems partly from De Zerbi’s prior relationship with Greenwood in France, where the Italian publicly backed the forward — comments that later drew criticism after De Zerbi joined Spurs, prompting him to issue a public apology. However, it has since emerged that De Zerbi has no intention of pursuing a reunion, and Tottenham are not believed to be planning any approach for the striker.
Reports from TEAMtalk indicate that those close to the situation see De Zerbi’s stance as a clear signal of where things stand, even while acknowledging Greenwood’s obvious ability. A return to the Premier League looks unlikely for now, though clubs in Spain and Italy are said to be keeping tabs on his availability.
For Tottenham specifically, sidestepping the situation may well be the prudent call. Beyond the off-field concerns, questions have also reportedly surfaced about Greenwood’s conduct behind the scenes, and with the club focused on rebuilding under De Zerbi, avoiding potential complications appears to be the priority as they look to strengthen the squad this summer.
