Guardiola’s impending Man City departure hands Liverpool a generational opportunity

Liverpool could find themselves with a rare chance to appoint one of the finest managers the game has ever seen.

The Daily Mail has reported that Pep Guardiola is preparing to leave Manchester City when the season ends, potentially triggering one of the most significant managerial shake-ups in Premier League history. With Liverpool having endured a difficult campaign under Arne Slot, the timing could hardly be more relevant.

Guardiola is understood to have made up his mind weeks ago, with a number of his backroom staff also anticipated to leave as part of a broader overhaul. A celebratory parade through Manchester is planned for Monday in recognition of his extraordinary legacy at the club, bringing together players from the men’s team, women’s squad, and academy. During his decade at the Etihad, he delivered 20 major honours, including six league titles and the Champions League.

With Xabi Alonso having already committed to Chelsea, Liverpool’s need for a credible long-term managerial appointment has become pressing. Guardiola’s sudden availability is the kind of opportunity that comes along perhaps once in a generation, and one that Fenway Sports Group would be unwise to overlook. The club possesses a global reputation, elite facilities, and a fanbase among the most devoted in world football — as well as a squad that, under the right management, could challenge for honours without significant rebuilding. Mo Salah’s recent call for a return to high-intensity attacking football suggests the club’s identity remains intact; it simply needs the right person to channel it.

Guardiola’s admiration for Liverpool is longstanding and genuine. He has spoken openly about how much mental energy he and his staff dedicated to working out how to contain Klopp’s side, and in April 2024 he expressed his respect for the club directly, describing Liverpool as a team that had consistently met his City side head-on. That is not the language of someone indifferent to the club.

The complication, of course, is perception. Moving from City to their closest rivals in recent years would be among the most contentious transfers in managerial history, and Guardiola may be reluctant to let it overshadow what has been a near-perfect tenure at the Etihad. There are also suggestions he could remain at City in a different role, which does not paint the picture of a man immediately seeking a new dugout challenge.

Even so, Guardiola is thought to be driven by ambition, and Liverpool — with their history, their stadium, and a squad crying out for inspiration — may represent exactly the kind of project that appeals to him. It is far from certain, but it is an avenue Liverpool should pursue without hesitation.
