Liverpool are reportedly among several clubs monitoring the situation of James Trafford, who could be set for a potential exit from Manchester City in the near future.
The 23-year-old joined Pep Guardiola’s side from Burnley last summer and initially looked poised to secure a starting role. However, his status changed quickly following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma, which pushed him into a backup position. Reports suggest Trafford is now open to leaving in search of regular playing time, even though City would prefer to retain him.
According to reports, Liverpool and Chelsea have both expressed interest in signing the goalkeeper, who is keen to establish himself as a first-choice option elsewhere. Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa are also said to be monitoring the situation, although Tottenham’s chances could depend on their Premier League status.
A move to Liverpool, however, would not guarantee Trafford immediate first-team football. The Reds have already secured Giorgi Mamardashvili as a long-term successor to Alisson Becker, whose future remains uncertain beyond next year. While Trafford’s statistical output this season compares favourably, both he and Mamardashvili have largely been used as second-choice options.
Trafford’s pedigree is clear—he set a Championship record with 12 consecutive clean sheets for Burnley and recently impressed in a major final with City. Still, any move to Anfield would likely hinge on assurances over his role, which may be difficult given the current goalkeeping hierarchy.
