Heartbreak for Wataru Endo as the Liverpool midfielder’s World Cup dream comes to an end with his retirement from international football.

Wataru Endo has posted an emotional tribute after a serious injury ruled him out of the 2026 World Cup, ending his Japan career altogether.
The 33-year-old had hoped to lead Japan as captain at the tournament, but ongoing ankle issues made that impossible. With his withdrawal confirmed, Endo also announced his retirement from international duty after years of service to the national team.
Injury Cuts World Cup Dream Short
His club season was derailed in February when he suffered torn ankle ligaments in a win over Sunderland. Despite a determined recovery effort that saw him return for a May friendly against Iceland, he couldn’t get fully fit in time, ending his place in Japan’s World Cup squad for North America.
An Emotional Goodbye
In his statement, Endo said he had no regrets despite the disappointment of missing the tournament. He spoke proudly of Japan’s progress since the 2022 World Cup, where as captain he helped turn the goal of winning the tournament into a realistic ambition rather than a far-off dream.
He also voiced belief in the current squad, calling them a special group capable of historic achievements, and said he’ll now cheer Japan on as a fan, confident the team can eventually win the World Cup.
A Painful End to a Storied Career
This would have been Endo’s third World Cup. He was part of the 2018 squad but didn’t play, before becoming a key figure in Qatar 2022, where Japan recorded famous wins over top nations. Many had seen 2026 as the ideal stage for him to captain his country — injury denied him that chance.
Liverpool’s Perspective
For Liverpool, there’s a silver lining: Endo will now have extra time to recover and prepare ahead of the new season under incoming head coach Iraola. While his exact role under the new manager is still unclear, his leadership and game-closing ability have made him a valued squad member.
Legacy
Though his international career didn’t end as he’d hoped, Endo’s impact on Japanese football — as both player and captain — leaves a lasting legacy of resilience and professionalism. Liverpool fans will now hope he brings that same spirit to another big season at Anfield.
