Lucas Bergvall’s name has popped back up in Barcelona circles, even though the Catalan club had long since moved on from their previous interest in the Tottenham midfielder. Back in 2024 Barcelona chased the Swede hard while he was still at Djurgårdens, only for Spurs to swoop in and win the race for his signature.
This time around it’s not Barcelona knocking, but Bergvall’s camp. According to SPORT, his representatives have been sounding out several of Europe’s top clubs in search of a way out of Tottenham, with the asking price said to sit around £60 million, a figure that underlines just how highly he’s now rated.
Barcelona’s response, though, has reportedly been firm. Sporting director Deco has no appetite to reopen that file, with the club treating the saga as closed business rather than unfinished. Their midfield priorities now lie elsewhere, chiefly with Manchester City’s Rodri, who they see as the ready-made, experienced upgrade their engine room needs rather than another long-term project.
The near-miss two years ago still stings as a what-could-have-been. Barcelona had reportedly lined up a deal worth around €7 million plus €3 million in add-ons, and Bergvall even flew out to meet Deco and tour the club’s facilities. But Tottenham refused to let him slip away, sweetening both the fee to Djurgårdens and the personal terms on the table, and Barcelona chose not to enter a bidding war.
Bergvall himself later admitted picking Spurs over Barça was one of the toughest calls of his career, describing it as a close call that took him a long time to settle before concluding North London was the better path for his development.
Two years on, the tables have turned. Where Barcelona once pursued him relentlessly, they’re now said to be politely waving away his side’s approach. Bergvall represents promise and upside, but with Rodri viewed as the readymade fix, Barcelona’s midfield rebuild looks set to bypass him entirely — leaving another reunion with Camp Nou looking unlikely for now.
