Liverpool have reportedly entered the race for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, with Manchester United also making direct contact over a potential transfer.
The 22-year-old England international has continued to impress at Selhurst Park, attracting growing interest from some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs. With his reputation rising quickly, Palace could soon face a major battle to keep hold of him.
Crystal Palace have already seen several key players leave in recent windows, including Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, Eberechi Eze to Arsenal and Marc Guehi to Manchester City. Wharton could potentially be the next big name through the exit door.
According to Indy Kaila, Manchester United made an enquiry about Wharton yesterday, with Liverpool following up by making their own call this morning.
For now, there is no indication that either approach has developed into formal negotiations. Palace are expected to do everything possible to retain one of their most important players.
What’s next for Adam Wharton?
Wharton remains a crucial part of Palace’s squad, and losing another star player so soon would be a huge blow, particularly after the departure of former manager Oliver Glasner.
The Eagles could already be facing a challenging campaign, and allowing Wharton to leave with the transfer window approaching its conclusion would make their situation even more difficult.
However, Palace have shown in recent years that big offers can be difficult to turn down. If Liverpool or Manchester United make a serious proposal, the club could face another difficult decision.
Who needs Wharton more?
Manchester United have already strengthened their midfield with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos this summer, but questions remain over whether those additions are enough.
Santos still lacks extensive experience at the highest level, while Tielemans is further into his career. Wharton could offer United a younger option who already has significant Premier League experience and could potentially become a key figure in their midfield.
Liverpool, meanwhile, could also benefit from Wharton’s quality and long-term potential. However, their need for him may not be quite as urgent, with the Reds arguably having bigger priorities in defence and attack.
With both Premier League giants now showing interest, Adam Wharton’s future could become one of the stories to watch closely before the transfer window closes.
