PSG lifted the UEFA Super Cup after a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday night, but Liverpool supporters were more focused on the situation surrounding Bradley Barcola, who remained on the bench for the entire game.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué scored to secure the trophy for the French champions in Salzburg, while Barcola’s complete absence from the action sparked fresh speculation about his future.
Barcola gets zero minutes as Liverpool links grow
Barcola was named among PSG’s substitutes but failed to make it onto the pitch, despite Luis Enrique making five changes during the match.
His unused-substitute status has raised eyebrows given the growing reports linking the 23-year-old winger with a move to Liverpool.
According to Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool want to use Barcola on the left wing and are continuing talks with PSG over a potential transfer before Deadline Day.
The Reds are reportedly confident of getting the deal done. If Barcola arrives at Anfield, 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha is expected to see more opportunities on the right flank.
Being left unused in such an important final could be another indication that Barcola’s future in Paris is becoming increasingly uncertain.
PSG chief refuses to rule out Barcola departure
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi also added fuel to the speculation after the final by refusing to guarantee that Barcola will remain at the club.
When asked about the winger’s future, Al-Khelaifi said they were handling the situation calmly and refused to confirm whether Barcola would stay or leave.
With Liverpool reportedly pushing ahead with negotiations and PSG unwilling to completely shut the door on a transfer, Barcola’s unused role in the Super Cup could potentially have been his final appearance in a PSG matchday squad.
