Liverpool Continue Their African Recruitment Drive
Liverpool have a long-standing connection with African football, with several African stars playing important roles in the club’s history. During the Jürgen Klopp era, Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah became two of the most influential players at Anfield, helping the Reds win major trophies and create unforgettable moments for supporters.
The pair were also among the biggest names in African football during their time together at Liverpool, competing against each other for the Africa Cup of Nations and the African Player of the Year award.
However, Liverpool’s relationship with African footballers stretches back decades. Zimbabwean goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar was one of the early African stars to make a major impact in the Premier League, while South African forward Gordon Hodgson remains Liverpool’s fourth-highest goalscorer of all time.
Other African players, including Momo Sissoko, Joel Matip, Kolo Touré, Naby Keïta and Titi Camara, have also represented Liverpool and enjoyed memorable spells at the club.
At present, though, there are relatively few African players within Liverpool’s ranks. Mor Talla Ndiaye is currently the club’s only African player, having arrived during the January transfer window and already making several appearances for Andoni Iraola’s senior side.
That could soon change, with Liverpool continuing to expand their recruitment across the continent. The Reds are strongly interested in Senegalese youngster Ibrahim Mbaye, while they are also pursuing other promising African talents.
Liverpool’s increased focus on global youth recruitment has been particularly noticeable over the past year. The club has invested heavily in its scouting network and added staff to identify talented youngsters from different parts of the world.
That strategy has already led to the signing of Ndiaye, while Liverpool are reportedly in discussions over Diego Pelembe and have secured the arrival of Sidy Barhama Ndiaye.
Now, according to the latest reports, two more African youngsters could be heading to Liverpool in the coming days.
Zee Sports in Gambia reports that Gambian talents Musa Jatta and Sheriff Bah are set to travel to England. Both players currently represent BST Academy, which competes in the top division of Gambian football.
Jatta is understood to be a midfielder, while Bah operates further forward as an attacking midfielder and playmaker.
The report claims that both youngsters have agreed to travel to Liverpool for trials, where they will train with the club’s academy and have an opportunity to impress the coaching staff.
Their potential move appears to be the result of Liverpool’s global recruitment network identifying them as players with the potential to develop at the club.
However, there is an important issue surrounding their potential arrival. Liverpool currently have only one available ESC slot, while neither player is expected to meet the requirements for a UK work permit.
As a result, should Liverpool decide to sign either player permanently, they would likely need to be sent out on loan to continue their development, similar to the situation involving Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who is currently looking for a temporary club.
