Romano: Spurs Locked In Two-Horse Race For £100m Star As Man City Pull The Plug

Tottenham have become one of two serious contenders chasing Chelsea winger Pedro Neto this summer, with Saudi club Al Hilal also pushing hard for the Portuguese international.

Fabrizio Romano says the fight for Neto’s signature is shaping up as a straight fight between Spurs and Al Hilal if the 26-year-old departs Stamford Bridge before deadline day.

Chelsea signed Neto from Wolves in August 2024 for roughly £54 million, but he hasn’t nailed down a regular starting spot despite moments of quality, leaving the door open for an exit. For Tottenham, he’d fit neatly into Roberto De Zerbi’s plans to overhaul the attack after successive 17th-place Premier League finishes left the club determined to build a stronger squad around their new boss.

Neto isn’t Spurs’ top target, though — that’s still Manchester City’s Savinho, who they’re actively working to sign. There’s even talk of a possible double swoop that would also bring in Omar Marmoush, which would send a serious message about Tottenham’s ambitions this summer.

Chelsea are said to want around £100 million for Neto, though Romano thinks the final fee could end up lower. On GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast, he named Spurs and Al Hilal as the two clubs to watch, while confirming Savinho is still Tottenham’s priority. He also noted Man City looked at Neto but walked away once they saw Chelsea’s asking price.

Al Hilal have already opened talks with Neto’s camp and look genuinely interested, and their financial muscle could make them tough for Spurs to beat if Chelsea’s valuation doesn’t come down. City, for their part, had approached Neto’s agent weeks ago as a fallback plan in case Savinho left for Tottenham, but balked at the £100 million price tag.

Time is ticking for Tottenham, who started the window strongly but have since slowed their business. Beefing up the attack is now a top priority for De Zerbi, who’s after more pace, creativity, and goals up front — and landing any combination of Savinho, Marmoush, or Neto would transform the squad.

Marmoush would give Spurs another central option alongside Dominic Solanke and Richarlison, while Savinho would add pace and flair out wide. Mohammed Kudus, back after an injury-hit second half of last season, could also feature heavily given his ability to play on either flank. Land both Savinho and Marmoush, and De Zerbi could field a genuinely dangerous front three with Kudus, Marmoush, and Savinho leading the line.

Neto remains in the picture too, though Spurs will need to weigh whether he’s worth Chelsea’s asking price — especially with Al Hilal circling and turning this into one of the more interesting sagas of the window.
