Liverpool Step Up Barcola Pursuit as Mbaye Deal Looks Increasingly Uncertain
Liverpool are intensifying their efforts to secure a deal for PSG winger Bradley Barcola before the transfer window closes, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, while a move for Ibrahim Mbaye appears much less likely at this stage.
Barcola remains Liverpool’s top target to help replace Mohamed Salah. The French winger is reportedly open to moving to Anfield, while both he and Mbaye have been left out of PSG’s plans as their respective futures are resolved.
Romano has played down suggestions that Liverpool are preparing a huge double swoop, but he confirmed that negotiations for Barcola are progressing. Talks between Liverpool and PSG are reportedly taking place on a daily basis as the transfer deadline approaches.
The Reds are still trying to reach an agreement over the financial package, with Barcola said to be keen on the move. Liverpool could also consider bringing in another winger if Cody Gakpo completes a potential transfer to Tottenham.
Mbaye remains on Liverpool’s shortlist, with the club having already made contact with his representative, Jorge Mendes. However, his asking price remains a major obstacle.
Romano does not expect Liverpool to spend around £171million to sign both players. Instead, he believes PSG would need to lower their demands before a double deal becomes realistic.
Liverpool Could Benefit From Late-Window Price Drops
Liverpool could potentially find more favourable terms if negotiations continue into the final days of the window.
Barcola is currently valued at around £145million, although PSG could reportedly be willing to consider a fee closer to £120million. That would still represent a huge investment but would fall short of a new British transfer record.
Mbaye, meanwhile, is believed to have a price tag of approximately £50million, although that could potentially drop to between £30million and £45million.
For now, Barcola remains Liverpool’s clear priority, with Mbaye viewed as a secondary option if PSG reduce their demands.
