Tottenham fans have questioned Roberto De Zerbi’s decision to leave a key player out of the starting XI against Brentford.

Many Tottenham supporters were left scratching their heads from the start after Roberto De Zerbi opted not to include one of the team’s most highly-rated players in his starting lineup. However, once he was introduced from the bench, he immediately showed why fans had been questioning the decision.

Despite having limited time on the pitch, Destiny Udogie brought plenty of energy and attacking intent. His pace and willingness to push forward caused Brentford’s defence problems whenever he got involved.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews later appeared to highlight just how dangerous Udogie had been. His comments suggested he was relieved the Tottenham full-back had not started the game, as Brentford only had to deal with his threat for a limited period after his introduction.

Udogie’s cameo is likely to increase the frustration among Spurs supporters who believe the Italian should be a regular starter. His attacking runs, speed and ability to support Tottenham’s forwards added an extra dimension to the team after he came on.

Although Udogie finished with a 6.7 rating, the figure arguably failed to reflect the influence he had during his time on the pitch. His constant movement and attacking ambition made him one of Tottenham’s more noticeable players after entering the game.

Andrews’ comments have only intensified the debate surrounding De Zerbi’s selection. Several Tottenham fans have questioned why Udogie was left on the bench when his performance clearly demonstrated the problems he could cause the opposition.

The argument from supporters is straightforward: if Brentford’s manager was relieved that Udogie had not started, why was Tottenham’s own manager reluctant to put him in the XI from the beginning?

De Zerbi could now come under increasing pressure to reconsider his selection for Tottenham’s next fixture. If Udogie continues producing an impact whenever he is given an opportunity, leaving him on the bench from the start could become increasingly difficult to defend.

For many Spurs fans, the message is clear — they want to see Udogie making an impact from the opening whistle rather than being introduced later in an attempt to change the game.
