Andoni Iraola Drops Major Cody Gakpo Transfer Hint as Liverpool Eye More Attacking Signings

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has admitted that he cannot guarantee Cody Gakpo will still be at Anfield when the transfer window closes on September 1.

The Dutch forward has recently been linked with moves to Tottenham and Manchester City, while Liverpool’s expected signing of Bradley Barcola could potentially have a major impact on Gakpo’s future.

Speaking about the situation, Iraola explained that anything can happen while the transfer window remains open. He admitted that it is impossible to predict which offers may arrive or what could happen with members of his squad.

However, Liverpool are unlikely to allow Gakpo to leave without receiving a significant transfer fee. Reports have suggested a figure of around £60 million, although some believe the Reds could demand somewhere between £70 million and £80 million.

Barcola’s potential arrival from Paris Saint-Germain, in a deal reportedly worth around £120 million, could strengthen Tottenham’s hopes of signing Gakpo. Despite this, Liverpool may still want to bring in another attacking player before seriously considering selling the 27-year-old.

Iraola reportedly values Gakpo because of his versatility, particularly his ability to operate as a central striker as well as in wide positions.

Even if Barcola completes his move, Liverpool’s attacking options would still be heavily focused on the left wing, with players such as Rio Ngumoha, Barcola, Victor Munoz and Gakpo all capable of playing on that side.

Because of this, Liverpool may need to sign another naturally right-sided attacker before allowing Gakpo to depart. Several names, including Ibrahim Mbaye, Yankuba Minteh and Ismaila Sarr, have been mentioned as possible options.

There is also concern about Liverpool’s lack of depth in the striker position. Alexander Isak cannot be expected to play every match across a demanding season, especially if the club hopes to compete in multiple competitions.

For that reason, Gakpo could remain an important option for Iraola unless Liverpool strengthen their attack further before the deadline.

The article concludes that Liverpool could be willing to sell Gakpo if they manage to sign two additional attackers. However, allowing him to leave without securing enough attacking reinforcements could leave the squad short of options during the season.
