Tottenham Hotspur could reportedly look towards Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle United boss, if Roberto De Zerbi’s rocky start to the campaign ends in a managerial change.
Pressure is building on De Zerbi after a poor beginning to the 2026/27 season. Spurs went into the international break bottom of the Premier League, having failed to win any of their opening five league games, and they were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Liverpool. With his long-term future now in question, it is suggested that the club’s hierarchy may be weighing up alternatives in case they decide to act.
Howe is one of the names being mentioned. Football Insider reports that Bryan King, a former Tottenham senior scout, sees the Englishman as a credible option should De Zerbi be sacked. King highlighted Howe’s Premier League experience and his earlier spells at Bournemouth and Newcastle as points in his favour.
Howe is currently without a club after leaving Newcastle in the summer, ending a stay of almost five years at St James’ Park, where Matthias Jaissle has since taken over. This wouldn’t be the first time he has been connected with the north London side either. TEAMtalk claimed back in February that his name had been raised at board level as Spurs looked at possible managerial targets, which could strengthen the 48-year-old’s case if a change does come.
That said, nothing suggests Tottenham have contacted Howe or begun any talks. For now, he is simply a name being discussed rather than part of any formal process, and De Zerbi remains in charge.
Still, with the Italian under scrutiny, the question of who might come next is becoming a bigger talking point, and Howe looks set to be part of that conversation if Spurs decide to go in a new direction.
