Gary Neville believes Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa should be judged in light of Villa’s focus on their Europa League campaign, suggesting rotation and fatigue significantly influenced the result.
Villa suffered a third straight defeat at Villa Park, denting their push for a top-five Premier League finish and a place in the Champions League. However, Neville argued the scoreline did not truly reflect the balance between the sides.
Speaking after the match, he pointed to Villa’s packed schedule and looming European commitments as major factors. Head coach Unai Emery made seven changes to his lineup after the midweek Europa League semi-final first leg, resting several key players, including captain John McGinn due to a tight hamstring.
The reshuffled side struggled to find momentum early on, allowing Spurs to seize control with quick goals from Conor Gallagher and Richarlison inside the opening 25 minutes. Although Villa improved in the second half, a late effort from Emiliano Buendía proved only a consolation.
Neville explained that such extensive changes disrupted Villa’s cohesion and intensity, making it easier for Tottenham to capitalize. He also emphasized the physical toll of Villa’s recent run of fixtures, noting a visible drop in energy and sharpness, particularly early in the game.
While acknowledging Spurs’ strong start, Neville cautioned against overinterpreting the result, stressing that Villa were clearly prioritizing their upcoming European clash. With three matches remaining, Villa still sit six points ahead of Bournemouth in the race for a top-five finish, but their immediate attention now turns to the decisive Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest.
Neville concluded that Villa’s focus on Europe likely had a greater impact on the outcome than any clear superiority from Tottenham on the day.
