A Liverpool attacker has revealed he will be switching which national team he represents going forward.

A Liverpool academy prospect has made a significant decision regarding his international future, choosing to represent Honduras rather than the United States.

Keyrol Figueroa, yet to make his senior debut for the Reds (though he featured on the bench in a Carabao Cup loss to Crystal Palace), had previously represented the US at youth level, earning seven caps for the under-20s. He has now switched allegiance to Honduras — the nation his father, Maynor Figueroa, represented 181 times across two World Cup campaigns.

The Honduran football federation announced the news via a video posted on X, filmed at Wigan’s Brick Community Stadium where his father spent five years and won the FA Cup in 2013. The 19-year-old described pulling on the Honduran shirt as “the most beautiful thing,” with the country’s Director of Sport credited as a key figure in convincing him to make the switch.

The decision carries real consequences — Figueroa had previously admitted he wouldn’t relish facing the US, yet that scenario could easily arise in CONCACAF competition and World Cup qualifying. Honduras missed out on this summer’s World Cup, but at 19, Figueroa has ample time to follow his father’s footsteps onto the global stage.

At club level, the teenager — who bagged 12 goals in 15 Premier League 2 appearances this season, including a hat-trick against Everton’s under-21s — will be hoping to break through at Liverpool, whether through pre-season, cup football, or a loan move.
