Tottenham Hotspur supporters are concerned about a potential “new manager bounce” after Chelsea confirmed the signing of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach, replacing the recently dismissed Liam Rosenior.
The Spanish tactician claimed the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024 before a short-lived spell at Real Madrid that lasted under eight months. Spurs travel to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday in a fixture they desperately need to take points from, and although Alonso won’t be in the technical area for that match, supporters remain anxious about the potential effect his appointment could have.
Chelsea have endured a miserable campaign, with their FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Saturday leaving them with little to play for beyond a possible Europa League qualification place through the league.
Spurs are well aware of the galvanising effect a new appointment can bring — as demonstrated by Roberto De Zerbi’s impact at their own club — and fans fear that even without Alonso in the dugout, the news alone could motivate Chelsea’s players to raise their game. Supporters voiced their concerns on social media, with one noting that every Chelsea player will be eager to impress their incoming boss, and another speculating that Alonso’s possible presence in the stands could energise the crowd.
Alonso is set to formally take charge on 1 July, though he may look to familiarise himself with his squad ahead of that date. Reports are split on whether he will attend Tuesday’s match or stay away for the remainder of the season.
Despite the lift Alonso’s appointment may give Chelsea, Spurs will take some encouragement from their opponents’ recent form — and will back themselves to get a result regardless.
