The representative of Cristian Romero has moved to quash mounting speculation over the Tottenham captain’s whereabouts in Argentina ahead of Sunday’s pivotal Premier League decider against Everton, categorically denying that the journey was made to attend football matches.
Eyebrows were raised after reports emerged suggesting Romero had travelled home to watch his boyhood club Belgrano take on River Plate in a domestic cup final, with some supporters questioning the wisdom of the trip given the enormity of what Spurs face on the final day.
Romero’s agent, however, was unequivocal in his response, stating via The Touchline on X that any suggestion the visit was made for the purpose of attending football matches is entirely inaccurate. The trip, his camp insists, was arranged well in advance as part of a structured rehabilitation programme, with full medical approval.
That account sits comfortably alongside earlier reporting from Alasdair Gold, who revealed that Romero had deliberately chosen to remain in England during a critical stage of Tottenham’s relegation battle despite being ruled out for the season. Rather than heading home at that juncture, the defender stayed close to his teammates while the Argentine Football Association dispatched kinesiologist Luis Garcia to London to supervise his recovery. The gesture drew widespread admiration and was widely interpreted as a mark of his dedication to the cause even while sidelined.
The current visit to Argentina is understood to represent the next phase of that same recovery plan, arranged in advance with appropriate medical sign-off. In that context, the explanation from his representatives is entirely in keeping with how Romero has conducted himself throughout what has been a deeply frustrating campaign.
The centre-back has been absent since sustaining a serious knee injury during Tottenham’s defeat to Sunderland in April, a challenge later assessed by the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel as warranting a red card against Brian Brobbey.
With his immediate focus on returning to full fitness in time for this summer’s World Cup with Argentina, continuing his rehabilitation on home soil is a perfectly logical progression. While the timing has inevitably drawn scrutiny given the high stakes of Sunday’s encounter, the broader picture is considerably less contentious than early reports implied.
