Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi has hit back at comments made by Everton boss David Moyes, after the former West Ham manager publicly declared his desire to see the Hammers avoid relegation.
Speaking ahead of Everton’s final-day clash with Spurs, Moyes left little ambiguity about where his sympathies lie. He stated openly that he hoped West Ham would stay up and assured that his side would be taking the match seriously.
While those words were warmly received by West Ham supporters, they did not sit well at Tottenham. De Zerbi was quick to respond, suggesting that Moyes had inadvertently handed him exactly the kind of motivational fuel he needed ahead of such a high-stakes fixture. The Spurs manager made clear that in a league where every game demands maximum effort, any suggestion of outside loyalties only sharpens his side’s focus.
The remarks have since sparked debate over whether Moyes was wise to speak so candidly. His intention may well have been to reassure supporters that Everton would remain fully competitive and uphold the integrity of the contest. In practice, however, his words appear to have added another layer of intensity to Tottenham’s preparations.
West Ham fans will have drawn encouragement from hearing their former manager back their survival bid so openly. But with everything on the line on the final day of the season, every word spoken in a press conference carries weight — and Moyes’ comments have only added to the pressure.
The stakes could hardly be higher. When Sunday’s matches conclude, either West Ham United or Tottenham Hotspur will be playing Championship football next season.
