Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League triumph and comfortable top-flight finish in 2024-25 felt like a turning point, but the following season told a very different story as Spurs were dragged into a relegation battle that went down to the wire.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side eventually secured safety in dramatic fashion, with a Joao Palhinha strike against Everton earning only their third win under the Italian and a first home league victory in more than five months. The result rendered West Ham’s victory over Leeds irrelevant in the survival picture, condemning the Hammers to the Championship while Spurs lived to fight another day in the Premier League.
The North London club will, however, know that another campaign of this nature cannot be repeated, and significant reinforcements will be needed to ensure next season goes more smoothly.
Those plans already appear to be taking shape, with Spurs closing in on a free transfer move for Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson. Having tried and failed to bring him to the club in January, Tottenham are now reportedly on the brink of finalising a deal after confirming their top-flight status.
Robertson is departing Anfield after nine years of distinguished service, during which he was part of the squad that claimed two Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2018-19. With his contract set to expire this summer, the experienced Scot is expected to join Spurs as a free agent, and journalist Ben Jacobs reported on X that an agreement in principle has already been struck.
Now 32, Robertson is in the final chapter of his career but remains a prominent figure for Scotland and could captain his country at what may be his last World Cup. De Zerbi will be looking to his leadership and experience to bring a degree of stability to a side that struggled for much of the season.
His route out of Liverpool was hastened by the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, which significantly reduced his playing time. Robertson made only 11 league starts in 2025-26, making a move an inevitable conclusion.
Spurs view him as a ready-made answer to a left-back position that caused persistent problems throughout the season, with right-footed Djed Spence occasionally pressed into service on the wrong flank as a makeshift solution.
Robertson departs having accumulated 276 Premier League appearances for Liverpool and earned back-to-back inclusions in the Champions League Team of the Season. He originally joined the Reds from Hull City in 2015.
