Rio Ngumoha has enjoyed a remarkable rise with Liverpool and England, but there is one unusual restriction that still applies to the teenage sensation: he is not yet allowed to share a dressing room with senior players such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, or Harry Kane.
The talented winger burst onto the scene in August 2025 when he made his Premier League debut for Liverpool, coming off the bench to score a dramatic late winner in a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United. His rapid progress continued throughout the season, earning him his first professional contract with the Reds until 2028 and eventually his senior England debut, making him one of the youngest players ever to represent the Three Lions.
Despite already featuring alongside some of football’s biggest names, Ngumoha has not been permitted to use the same dressing room facilities as Liverpool’s or England’s senior squads. The reason is simple: Football Association regulations classify all players under the age of 18 as children, meaning they cannot change alongside adult teammates.
As a result, the 17-year-old must wait until his 18th birthday on August 29 before he can fully join the senior dressing-room environment. The same rule has affected other young stars, including Arsenal prospect Ethan Nwaneri before he turned 18 and fellow teenager Max Dowman, who remains subject to the regulation.
That restriction has not stopped Ngumoha from making a strong impression on the pitch. The youngster has looked comfortable playing alongside established stars such as Salah, Van Dijk, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch. He also impressed on his England debut against New Zealand, where many observers considered him one of the standout performers.
Off the field, Ngumoha has credited teammates for helping him adapt to senior football. During pre-season, he revealed that Trey Nyoni played a key role in helping him settle into the first-team environment. He also spoke highly of Salah, describing the Egyptian forward as one of his idols and someone he learns a great deal from every day.
However, it was Andy Robertson who appeared to take on the biggest mentorship role. Ngumoha praised the experienced left-back for offering guidance and support, describing him as one of the world’s best in his position and a valuable source of advice.
Robertson’s departure to Tottenham Hotspur now means Ngumoha will continue his development without one of his most influential senior teammates. Nevertheless, the young winger’s future looks incredibly bright as he continues his rapid rise for both club and country.
