Romero Given Ultimatum — The Spurs Captain Must Take Note

Cristian Romero needs to take stock and think clearly as speculation over his Tottenham future refuses to die down.

De Zerbi could have done with a player of his quality during Spurs’ relegation battle last season, but Romero had been absent since suffering an injury in April. Both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are strongly linked with the defender, and few would fault him for pursuing either option.

At his peak, Romero is virtually undroppable — and alongside Micky van de Ven, the pair should form one of the most formidable defensive partnerships in the league. In practice, though, it has rarely been that straightforward.

The ongoing silence around his future is beginning to create tension behind the scenes at the club, and his social media activity aimed at the hierarchy has only added fuel to the fire.

Alderweireld Offers Romero a Reality Check

Former Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld, a man who gave everything for the club during his own time in North London, has stepped in with some timely advice for the Argentine.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the Belgian was blunt: the captain’s situation needs resolving fast. If Romero wants to leave, then he should go — but if he stays, his focus must return completely to the club. Alderweireld made clear that a captain harbouring doubts about his future is not a situation any club can afford to let drag on.

Van Hecke Eyed as Potential Successor

Spurs appear to already be exploring replacements, with De Zerbi keen to reunite with Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke. However, with one year remaining on his contract at the Amex, a reported £70 million fee would represent a steep outlay for the club.

Romero, when fully fit and disciplined, is a commanding presence at the back — and replacing that quality will not come cheap or easy. Many supporters had hoped academy prospect Luke Vuskovic might be handed a chance after impressing on loan at Hamburg, but it looks more likely he will move on this summer.

As Alderweireld rightly notes, the sooner this saga reaches a conclusion, the better for everyone involved — but for now, there is no resolution in sight.
