If Romero wants to leave, then he should go — but if he stays, his focus must return completely to the club. Spurs appear to already be exploring replacements, with De Zerbi keen to reunite with Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke. However, with one year remaining on his contract at the Amex, a reported £70 million fee would represent a steep outlay for the club.
Romero, when fully fit and disciplined, is a commanding presence at the back — and replacing that quality will not come cheap or easy.
