Tottenham Hotspur’s relentless summer recruitment drive shows no signs of slowing down, with another major signing now on the verge of completion after Fabrizio Romano confirmed a new arrival is undergoing a medical at Hotspur Way.
Spurs have wasted little time strengthening Roberto De Zerbi’s squad ahead of the new season. Defensive reinforcements have already arrived in the shape of Jan-Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, while Martin Dubravka has officially joined as experienced competition and cover for first-choice goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.
Tottenham’s business, though, is far from done. Attention has now turned to rebuilding the midfield, and the club appears on the brink of landing its first central addition of the summer. According to Romano, Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes is currently completing his medical at Hotspur Way after Tottenham finalised an agreement with West Ham United.
Spurs reportedly outpaced Manchester United in the race for the highly-rated midfielder by offering a stronger package worth around £85 million in guaranteed payments, rather than a deal heavily weighted toward bonuses. With personal terms already settled and the move now in its final stages, Fernandes is set to become Tottenham’s fifth signing of an ambitious transfer window.
While the fee marks a significant jump from what he cost just a year ago, Spurs are showing full confidence in the midfielder’s long-term potential as De Zerbi continues reshaping the squad around his tactical vision.
The spending may not stop there. Tottenham remain determined to push through an even bigger midfield overhaul, with Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali still firmly on the club’s radar. Reports suggest Spurs are increasingly optimistic about getting a deal done and are ramping up negotiations even as the Fernandes move nears completion.
Landing both Fernandes and Tonali would transform Tottenham’s midfield options and underline the club’s intent to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts next season. With another medical underway and further talks progressing, Tottenham’s remarkable summer rebuild looks to be gathering even more momentum.
