Liverpool Held by Newcastle as Frimpong Comes Under Fire
Liverpool were forced to settle for a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park in their opening Premier League fixture, with Jeremie Frimpong becoming the main focus of criticism from supporters.
The atmosphere was already intense before kick-off, with Alexander Isak making his return to his former club and receiving a hostile reception from the Newcastle faithful. Both sets of fans also paid tribute to former Newcastle manager and Liverpool player Kevin Keegan, who sadly passed away in July at the age of 75.
The match marked the first competitive game in charge for Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola and Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle. Newcastle twice appeared on course for victory after goals from Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock, while Cody Gakpo restored parity for Liverpool.
The Reds eventually salvaged a point in dramatic fashion when Dominik Szoboszlai converted a late penalty.
Despite avoiding defeat, Liverpool’s performance raised concerns, particularly Frimpong’s display. The Dutch full-back was rated 5.9 by SofaScore, making him the lowest-rated Liverpool player on the night.
Frimpong won just two of seven defensive duels, surrendered possession 17 times from 65 touches and was beaten by his opponent on two occasions. Liverpool journalist James Pearce also criticised the defender for repeatedly giving the ball away.
His passing was one of the brighter aspects of his performance, as he completed 81% of his passes and created three key chances.
Liverpool supporters, however, were far more critical on social media. Some questioned his defensive qualities, while others labelled his performance “pathetic” and even suggested he could eventually be remembered as one of the club’s worst signings.
After failing to consistently convince since joining Liverpool last season, Frimpong now faces growing pressure to silence the doubters and prove why the Reds made the decision to bring him to Anfield.
