Bookmakers have dramatically cut the odds on Gareth Southgate returning to management in the Premier League.
The former England boss stepped down from his role after Euro 2024 ended in disappointment, resigning just two days after England’s final defeat to Spain and bringing his eight-year tenure to a close. Since then, the 55-year-old has been repeatedly linked with top-flight jobs.
Southgate was strongly touted as a candidate for the Manchester United vacancy following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal in October 2024. However, United initially chose Ruben Amorim, who was later sacked earlier this month, before eventually appointing Michael Carrick. Southgate’s name also resurfaced during that process.
More recently, he has been mentioned as a possible option for Tottenham, with pressure increasing on Thomas Frank after another difficult season for Spurs following last year’s struggles under Ange Postecoglou.
Now, fresh betting odds suggest Southgate could be set for a London return. According to figures listed on Odds Checker, he is currently the leading contender to succeed Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace.
Glasner, despite guiding Palace to FA Cup success last season, has faced mounting criticism. His outspoken reaction to the club selling captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City raised questions about his future and reportedly frustrated chairman Steve Parish after a 2-1 loss to Sunderland. Although the pair later held talks to ease tensions, Palace are still preparing for a managerial change, with Glasner expected to depart at the end of the season.
Southgate has emerged as the bookmakers’ favourite to replace him, with Sky Bet, Paddy Power and William Hill offering odds of 5/1, while bet365 and BetVictor list him at 6/1.
The former England manager is no stranger to the Premier League, having previously managed Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2009, a spell that ultimately ended with relegation to the Championship.
Meanwhile, Glasner has insisted he remains fully focused on Palace until his exit. Speaking ahead of their 3-1 defeat to Chelsea, he confirmed he and Parish had held lengthy discussions and stressed that both remain “100 per cent committed” for the remainder of the season, despite his decision to leave and turn down a new contract.
