Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly rejected approaches from both Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United for Lucas Bergvall during the summer transfer window, despite significant interest in the highly rated midfielder.
Newcastle were understood to have tested Spurs’ resolve with an offer worth around £46 million. However, Tottenham were not prepared to let the 20-year-old leave for that figure. The North London club reportedly wanted closer to £60 million, along with a significant sell-on clause that would protect their interests should Bergvall eventually be sold for an even bigger fee.
The situation was made more interesting by Bergvall’s own desire to explore a move away from Tottenham. The Swedish midfielder was reportedly open to leaving as he looked for greater opportunities and a fresh challenge. His position appeared to put further pressure on Spurs to decide whether to cash in on one of their most highly regarded young players.
However, the situation changed following positive discussions between Bergvall and Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian coach is believed to have reassured the midfielder about his role and future within the squad, helping convince him to remain in North London.
As a result, Bergvall is now expected to stay at Tottenham until at least January, giving him another opportunity to establish himself under De Zerbi.
For Spurs, keeping Bergvall could prove to be an important decision. At just 20, he is still considered a long-term project with considerable potential, and Tottenham clearly believe his value could rise even further if he develops consistently under De Zerbi.
The decision to reject Newcastle’s £46 million approach also demonstrates how highly Tottenham currently rate the midfielder. Rather than accepting a huge fee immediately, Spurs appear willing to give Bergvall more time to develop and potentially become an important part of the club’s future.
The January transfer window could therefore become another major talking point if Bergvall’s situation changes. For now, however, Tottenham have managed to keep hold of the midfielder despite serious interest from Premier League rivals.
