Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has spoken about his strong ambition to one day make a return to Tottenham Hotspur, while also sharing some important advice with Cristian Romero regarding his future at Spurs.

Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has revealed he would happily return to Tottenham Hotspur and do all he can to help rebuild the club if the chance ever arose.

The Belgian spent six years in north London from 2015 to 2021, becoming a vital figure under Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs competed for Premier League titles and reached the 2019 Champions League final.

Since retiring, Alderweireld has observed Tottenham’s difficult season from afar and feels the club needs to rediscover the culture and values that once drove their success.

In an interview with The Times, the former defender said he still feels deeply connected to both the supporters and the club, adding that he would gladly return in any role if he could help.

Alderweireld also praised the character of the old Spurs squad, pointing to players such as Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Jan Vertonghen as humble personalities who always put the team first. He believes Tottenham must bring back that mentality moving forward.

The ex-centre-back stressed that any return would be focused on helping create something meaningful at the club once again.

Alderweireld also shared his thoughts on current captain Cristian Romero. While he praised Romero’s ability, he said the defender must show greater discipline and leadership after picking up several suspensions this season.

He added that a captain should help guide the team through difficult moments rather than become a liability on the pitch, stressing that centre-backs need to be calm, dependable and reliable leaders for the rest of the squad.
