Tottenham Eyeing ‘World-Class Goalkeeper’ to Replace Vicario

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly monitoring Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen as they look ahead to the January transfer window.
The North London side are said to be considering the 33-year-old Germany international as a potential long-term replacement for Guglielmo Vicario and could make a move when the market opens. Barcelona are understood to be willing to consider offers for ter Stegen after his return from a lengthy injury spell. He made his first appearance of the season on Tuesday, starting in Barça’s Copa del Rey win over Guadalajara — his first start since May.

Spurs weighing up ter Stegen move
According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham are planning another busy transfer window, with head coach Thomas Frank keen to reinforce the goalkeeping department. Vicario’s recent performances have raised concerns, with the Italian drawing criticism for errors and a noticeable loss of confidence.

Ter Stegen has become an option again after regaining fitness, particularly as Barcelona manager Hansi Flick now prefers summer signing Joan García as his first-choice goalkeeper. With former Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczęsny acting as understudy, ter Stegen has dropped to third in the pecking order and is believed to be available for a January exit.

Injuries have limited the German’s involvement over the past 18 months, with only nine appearances since the start of last season. Despite this, he remains highly regarded, with his most recent appearance for Germany coming in the Nations League finals in June.

uncertainty over vicario
Tottenham’s interest in a new goalkeeper may also be influenced by Vicario’s uncertain long-term future, with Italian clubs said to be tracking him ahead of a possible 2026 move. Since joining from Empoli in 2023, the Italian has been Spurs’ clear first choice, making 97 appearances and keeping 25 clean sheets.

An ankle injury ruled him out for more than three months last season, forcing Spurs to bring in Antonín Kinský as emergency cover in January. The Czech keeper has played twice this season.

Pressure building on Frank
Spurs’ inconsistent Premier League form has increased scrutiny on Thomas Frank, with just two wins from their last nine league games. As reported by Fabrizio Romano for GIVEMESPORT, the Danish coach is facing growing internal pressure, with discussions ongoing as the club assesses a challenging start to the campaign.
