Cristian Romero responds to news of Tottenham departure

Matt Wells has officially left Tottenham Hotspur to take over as manager of the Colorado Rapids.
Wells initially joined Spurs as an academy player before moving into coaching, eventually overseeing the Under-18s. After leaving Spurs in 2018, he returned in 2023 and became assistant manager under Ange Postecoglou. He continued in that role under Thomas Frank, supporting the Dane’s transition at the North London club.

With Tottenham’s form faltering in the latter half of 2025, the 37-year-old decided to move on, replacing Chris Armas at Colorado Rapids and aiming to lead the team into a successful 2026 season. The Rapids officially announced his appointment on Instagram on 23 December, a post liked by Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, who was sent off in the weekend clash with Liverpool.

Wells’ departure marks the second recent loss of a Spurs assistant manager, following Ryan Mason’s move to West Brom in the summer. While it comes at a challenging time for the club, Thomas Frank expressed his support, praising Wells’ contributions and wishing him well in his new role.

Frank told Tottenham’s official website on 23 December:
“When Matt joined my staff, I knew it was his dream to become a head coach, and while I would have loved to have kept him longer, I would never stand in the way of him achieving that. We are all delighted for Matt. He has contributed greatly to the club over many years, is an excellent coach and a wonderful person, and he has a bright future ahead of him. We wish him all the best.”
