Liverpool FC fans voiced their anger after Arne Slot decided to substitute Rio Ngumoha during the second half of the Reds’ Premier League encounter with Chelsea FC.
The teenage winger had been instrumental in Liverpool’s opening goal, providing the assist for Ryan Gravenberch’s stunning strike from distance.
Despite Liverpool searching for a way back into the lead at Anfield, Slot chose to make attacking changes by introducing fresh players.
Liverpool fans unhappy with Ngumoha substitution
Many supporters struggled to understand Slot’s thinking when he withdrew Ngumoha while leaving Cody Gakpo on the pitch.
Gakpo failed to produce a single shot and managed just one touch inside Chelsea’s penalty area before eventually being substituted 11 minutes later.
It was no surprise, then, that sections of the Anfield crowd reacted with boos when Ngumoha was taken off in the 65th minute.
Although Liverpool’s hierarchy are unlikely to make any major decisions based solely on fan reaction during a match, the incident highlighted the growing disconnect between the supporters and the head coach.
That situation becomes even more concerning when considering Liverpool’s long-standing reputation as a club deeply shaped by its managers.

There may be explanations for Liverpool’s struggles — from limited pace in wide areas to poor luck in certain matches.
However, with Ngumoha being the squad’s only naturally quick winger available and arguably Liverpool’s brightest performer against Chelsea, many fans were left wondering why he was removed so early in the game.
Slot could argue he wanted to carefully manage the development of the 17-year-old and avoid placing too much responsibility on him too soon.
Still, Liverpool have handled the youngster cautiously throughout the season, and there appeared to be a strong case for giving him more minutes — especially with the team lacking other attacking outlets.
