Liverpool’s Pursuit of Bundesliga Winger Raises Fresh Doubts Over Cody Gakpo’s Anfield Future

Liverpool’s summer recruitment plans are beginning to crystallise, with one name in particular offering an insight into the club’s strategic thinking.

The Reds are reported to have formally expressed interest in Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Touré — a move that, if it progresses, could have significant implications for Cody Gakpo’s future on Merseyside.

The 20-year-old, who represents Ivory Coast at international level, has been among the Bundesliga’s most exciting discoveries this season. His electric displays on the left wing have attracted attention from several Premier League clubs, with Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United also said to be keeping close tabs on him.

Touré joined Hoffenheim from Swedish club Hammarby in early 2025 and needed little time to settle. What began as a steady introduction to German football evolved into a genuine breakout campaign throughout the 2025/26 season. Hoffenheim are reportedly expected to seek between €40 million and €50 million for him, though sources indicate a fee closer to the lower end could be sufficient if talks move swiftly.

His numbers tell their own story. Despite featuring for a side that has struggled for consistency, Touré has contributed five Bundesliga goals and nine assists across more than 2,300 league minutes. That output carries extra weight when you consider the context — producing in a mid-table outfit demands a different level of individual quality and mental resilience than excelling in a dominant, star-studded team.

Liverpool’s pursuit of another left-sided option inevitably raises questions about Gakpo, who has found consistent form elusive under Arne Slot this season. With Federico Chiesa’s position also uncertain, the club may be preparing for a meaningful reshaping of their attack. Touré offers pace, directness, the ability to beat his man, and creative instincts in transition — attributes that would address a perceived weakness on Liverpool’s left flank.

At international level, he has already earned five caps for Ivory Coast and scored twice, giving him a maturity that belies his age.

Liverpool will not have it all their own way, however. United, Villa, and Newcastle are all credible suitors with their own compelling pitches. Yet if the Reds do make a serious push for Touré, it would be a strong indication that significant changes are on the horizon at Anfield this summer.
