Slot’s Position Under Threat as Spaniard Emerges as Top Replacement Target Following FSG Change of Heart

Liverpool’s troubled campaign has cast a shadow over Arne Slot’s position, with Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique now emerging as a frontrunner should Fenway Sports Group consider making a change.

Bookmakers have installed the Spaniard as the leading candidate to take charge at Anfield if FSG decide to part ways with Slot, according to TEAMtalk, which also reports that thinking within the club has shifted, with a managerial change no longer being entirely dismissed behind the scenes.

No formal decision has been made, and Slot remains in the job. But the scrutiny around him has intensified following a difficult season and a damaging 4-2 loss to Aston Villa. As Reuters reported, Liverpool are currently fifth and battling to secure a return to the Champions League, with Slot himself acknowledging that his side have been too easy to score against.

The Enrique speculation is straightforward to explain. He is among the most coveted managers in European football, and his time at PSG has only burnished his credentials. TEAMtalk notes that he steered the French club to a historic quadruple last season and is now on the verge of a second consecutive Champions League final appearance — the kind of record that will always turn heads when a club of Liverpool’s stature begins to look unsettled.

Yet the challenge facing Liverpool runs deeper than a dip in form.

The team appears to have lost some of its former identity, and Mohamed Salah’s recent public remarks brought that tension into sharp focus. The Egyptian forward called for Liverpool to rediscover the relentless, high-energy style that characterised the Jürgen Klopp era — comments widely interpreted as a pointed critique of Slot’s more measured and structured approach. Gary Neville suggested the remarks reflected genuine discontent within the camp and would do little to ease the pressure on Slot, particularly with Salah himself set to depart in the summer.

When a player of that standing speaks out publicly, it rarely signals a harmonious dressing room.

Even so, moving on from Slot would be an enormous call. He delivered the Premier League title in his debut season — an achievement that should not be written off lightly just because his second year has fallen short. Football, however, can be unforgiving, and Liverpool cannot afford prolonged stagnation. Should FSG sense that the squad has stopped buying into his methods, they may ultimately feel compelled to act.
