Arsenal’s New Signing Reveals Why He Chose the Gunners Over Man Utd
Arsenal have officially completed the signing of Manchester United academy graduate James Scanlon, with the young attacker explaining what convinced him to make the switch to the Emirates.
The 19-year-old, who turns 20 next month, spent the second half of last season on loan at League Two side Swindon Town, helping them finish ninth.
After returning to Old Trafford during the summer, Scanlon was announced as an Arsenal player on Saturday. Speaking to the club’s official website, he expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter.
When asked what persuaded him to leave United for Arsenal, Scanlon pointed to the Gunners’ ambition and desire to keep improving.
He said he was impressed by the positive direction of the club and the hunger within the squad to achieve even more. Scanlon also believes he can contribute to Arsenal’s continued progress.
The Gibraltar international described himself as a creative attacker who enjoys scoring and providing assists, adding that his aim is to entertain and excite supporters.
Scanlon never made a senior appearance for Manchester United, although he was included in their squad for a Europa League meeting with Real Sociedad in March 2025.
Another Man Utd Academy Graduate Could Follow
Arsenal are also reportedly close to completing a deal for another United academy product, defender Habeeb Ogunneye.
The 20-year-old is expected to primarily feature for Arsenal’s Under-21 side while also getting opportunities to train with the first team.
Ogunneye recently said goodbye to United after spending 15 years at the club, thanking everyone involved before describing his move as the start of a new chapter.
