Chelsea have made a late push to sign Lucas Bergvall from Tottenham before Deadline Day closes, with Fabrizio Romano confirming contact between the two clubs. The Blues remain on the hunt for a fresh midfielder despite an already busy window, a search made more urgent by Enzo Fernandez’s British-record £125million move to Manchester City.
Romano reported that Chelsea reached out to gauge whether Bergvall could be prised away in the final hours, but Tottenham’s response was firm: the Sweden international is not for sale. According to the transfer insider, Spurs are determined to hold onto the 20-year-old, making any deal extremely unlikely with so little time left.
Bergvall’s summer has already been eventful. The arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali raised questions about his role under Roberto De Zerbi, and he was linked with a move away, with Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United both credited with interest. Tottenham turned down those approaches, and De Zerbi is said to have personally talked Bergvall into staying, promising him a genuine role and encouraging him to review his situation again in January.
Early-season involvement backs that up — Bergvall started Spurs’ opening Premier League match before being taken off at the break, though he didn’t feature off the bench in the 2-0 loss to Newcastle. Even with his starting spot uncertain, Tottenham’s hierarchy has shown no willingness to sanction a Deadline Day sale.
Chelsea’s difficulty in landing a midfielder has been compounded elsewhere. Interest in Roma’s Manu Kone stalled after manager Gian Piero Gasperini blocked his exit, with Roma confirming he’ll stay beyond the deadline, while a move for Monaco’s Lamine Camara has also proven hard to get over the line as time runs out.
That left Bergvall as a fallback option, but Tottenham’s resolve suggests Chelsea’s financial muscle won’t be enough to change their minds. With De Zerbi valuing him highly and the player already committed to staying at least until January, Spurs look set to see off any last-gasp offer.
Barring a dramatic U-turn from Tottenham or an offer too big to refuse, Bergvall appears set to stay in north London. Even so, the late Chelsea interest is a reminder of how highly rated the young midfielder has become, despite the competition for places following Spurs’ pricey midfield rebuild.
