Cody Gakpo’s future at Liverpool appeared uncertain only a few weeks ago, but the Dutch forward is now producing performances that are making him increasingly difficult to leave out of the team.
His impressive return to form could also create an unexpected challenge for Liverpool’s new record signing, Bradley Barcola.
Gakpo was one of Liverpool’s standout performers in their 2-0 victory over Ipswich, providing the assists for both of Alexander Isak’s early goals. His contribution took his Premier League record for the season to one goal and three assists in just three appearances.
The turnaround is particularly remarkable considering Gakpo endured a difficult 2025/26 campaign. During the summer, there was even speculation that he could leave Anfield, with Manchester City reportedly among the clubs interested in him. However, Liverpool decided to keep the forward, and that decision is already looking increasingly justified.
Supporters have praised the club for holding onto Gakpo, with many believing that allowing him to leave would have been a major mistake. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has also highlighted the importance of his fellow Dutchman, insisting that Gakpo will continue to play a significant role for the team this season.
Another encouraging development has been Gakpo’s growing understanding with Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker praised Gakpo after their victory, acknowledging the quality of the passes that created both of his goals.
Meanwhile, Bradley Barcola now faces strong competition for a place in Liverpool’s attack. Despite arriving as the club’s record signing and making his debut from the bench against Ipswich, he could find it difficult to immediately secure a regular starting position if Gakpo continues performing at this level.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher even joked that Barcola could struggle to get into the team because of Gakpo’s current form.
For Gakpo, the recent performances represent an impressive comeback after a challenging period. For Liverpool, however, the competition between Gakpo and Barcola could become a welcome problem as the club looks to build one of the strongest attacking units in the league.
