The decision quickly sparked widespread debate, with former officials and pundits offering contrasting views. Dermot Gallagher was particularly critical, claiming Spurs were denied a “clear penalty” and questioning why VAR failed to intervene.

However, Gallagher explained that VAR official Jarred Gillett opted not to overturn the original decision made by referee Stuart Attwell. Gallagher clarified that while both actions can warrant yellow cards, referees are often advised to apply discretion. Issuing two bookings in that situation, he suggested, could have caused even more controversy given the emotional context.
